The simplest way is to use the following extension documented by is a
couple of lines on James' page :

xt> A result method can also have the form java:class where java is
bound
xt> to the namespace URI http://www.jclark.com/xt/java and class is the
name
xt> of a Java class that implements the
com.jclark.xsl.sax.OutputDocumentHandler
xt> interface (which extends org.xml.sax.DocumentHandler).

There is an example in our download section :
/downloads/examples/outputhandlers/formatedtext/
