You may even not need to write it !
I have checked with the C release of tidy and tidy does had the spaces :

<test>
<p/>
</test>

gives (tidy -xml -asxml test.xml)

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<test>
  <p />
</test>

You can tell your students to use this as a workaround and I'll see if I
can find the time today to wire the Java release of tidy
(http://www3.sympatico.ca/ac.quick/jtidy.html) as a XT output method.

I should have thought of tidy before !
