Yes, it is worth mentioning. And Apache itself is also such an example !

The difference are probably :

a) that these projects were clearly "orphans" while XT is in a more
complex situation and

b) that they were involving organizations rather than individuals which
is often creating more passionate situations.

While I have the experience to organize such a project (I have been
managing the 2nd level European technical support for Sybase servers
products for 2 years and this had many similarities with this project),
I have neither enough time to spend nor the technical experience to
maintain XT alone.

This cold reception could therefore end the project by discouraging
volunteers to help.

I hope it will not be the case.
