Simon,
I understand your point but don't follow you 100% though...
On the contrary, I think that because it's Open Source and a voluntary
work James can feel free to stop working on XT.
Being Open Source means that if anyone can take over the maintenance.

Where a commercial product could have been "end of lifed", there is
still a possibility to continue using and supporting XT because it's
Open Source.
Open Source should facilitate changing "stewardship" as you said in a
previous post, rather than being an obstacle.
