We at go2online.com are using XT as a component in our dynamic presentation
architecture. We use XT to transform a common code base to WML, HDML, etc,
to support different wireless platforms. However, due to performance
considerations when using it with ColdFusion build in Java support, we were
forced to switch to Microsoft implementation, as ColdFusion has native COM
support. I am not saying that XT was slower, but the overall combination of
ColdFusion + MSXML proved to be much faster than ColdFusion + Java + XT.

I think not only XT should have C++/COM implementation, but also, it should
be encouraged to be part of other OpenSource architectures as XSL component.
There is a need to reach out to commercial organizations and other open
source groups to embrace and enhance XT. XT group alone, can not sustain the
growth of XT.

As and when I get free time, I will try my best to contribute to XT and
suggest enhancements from Wirelss & BioTech industries perspectives.

Hopefully we can get beyond a name and on to the bigger issue - extending
the life of "xt" whatever it is called. It is getting increasingly hard to
"defend" XT. I think the efforts to formalize an open source notion behind
it is great and past due. My question is - who is using XT and are they
willing to help? For example, MacroMedia's Allaire organization uses XT in
their process of converting JSP code to Java classes. Has anyone
approached them to help in the ongoing support of XT? Since I use Jrun as
my preferred app server/servlet engine, I was forced to track which XT they
provided. [ sadly not too big a deal now since no new versions are coming
out ] But I wonder what other companies are doing with it from a
commercial standpoint. Since some features such as node-set aren't
universal, I'm happily stuck with XT as my XSLT engine as conversion to
other engines will not be straightforward.

Finally, with the XSLT message boards filling up with talk of XSLT 1.1,
something really needs to happen with XT, IMO, or the great effort by James
and us early adopters will fade away.

My vote? Call it openXT and move forward.

Cheers!
