OK here goes.

Requirement:

1. To be able to locate, within an xml document, from any
node of that document, another node, using an xpath statement,
   from a java application.

Context. I need access to a parsed document (dom or any other).
Based on user actions I want to be able to generate a string,
have it parsed as xpath, then use that parsed string to generate
the query into the xml document.

Use case. An application using XML source (text) document,
SMIL links to audio (.wav) of same source. User queries, of
the nature 'move up one level', find next section etc etc,
will be converted into xpath statements. the response from
the system needs to then either report an error or return
the node/nodelist/text from the query.

Hierarchy as I see it

        my-app
query layer | SMIL interface | audio access
dom(or other) interface | xpath parse interface

Application (version is pre xml) is at www.daisy.org

Am I talking sense? Can it be done?
(more to come)

In hope, DaveP
